The local city council votes to ban the sale of recreational marijuana

Recreational dispensaries across the state want to start selling marijuana, but one local city said that wouldn’t happen.

As reported on News Center 7 at 11 a.m., leaders at Monday’s Oakwood City Council meeting said selling marijuana was not in the best interest of the city.

“It just doesn’t make sense to have a real operator selling the products,” said Steven Byington, Oakwood’s vice mayor.

That’s why the City Council unanimously voted no on recreational marijuana dispensaries.

“We really wouldn’t see that as a business we want,” Byington said.

Several neighbors said they didn’t understand the point of banning pharmacies when someone could simply drive to a neighboring town’s pharmacy.

“People will still be able to use the product, they will still be able to process the product,” Byington said. “They could buy it somewhere else.”

The city charter gives the City Council the ability to decide what business can come to Oakwood.

“It allows us to decide what we think is in the best interest of our community,” Byington said.

The city council cannot stop people from growing or using legal amounts of marijuana in the city.
