MINNEAPOLIS — Emily Bjorke says everything she does is rooted in female empowerment.
Those roots emerged in high school when she played in an all-girls punk band in the Twin Cities.
Bjorke graduated from Maple Grove High School in 2016 and continued college at Mankato State University.
“I love writing music for myself, but I love writing music that ultimately goes to other people,” she said.
Bjorke began composing music for the Minneapolis-based company In the Groove Music, which gave her the opportunity to write the opening song for the WNBA games on CBS – something she felt was a great fit for the brand.
“I’m going to do everything I can to make this the most powerful sound that empowers me, and I hope for the best that it does that for other people too,” Bjorke said.
Bjorke’s was chosen from all entries.
From her couch in Los Angeles, she heard her music on national television in May. It happened to be before a game of her hometown team: the Minnesota Lynx beating the New York Liberty.
“I was on top of the world. I actually said I would cut my hair off if I got it because I wanted it so bad,” Bjorke said. “And my hair is up, but it’s cut off. I’m kind of intense like that.”
Her work has made her a fan of the game and she hopes others will too.
“I just hope that whoever sees it, whether you’re a WNBA fan or not, or hopefully become, that you’re welcomed into the game, excited, ready to go and ready to live a changed life and to join that world. I have that,’ said Bjorke.
