The mountains of flood-damaged property continue to grow in Mankato

MANKATO, Minnesota — The piles of items continued to grow Thursday at the flood-damaged rubble dump on Mankato’s north side.

Items range from wood to carpet, to couches and toys.

“A bunch of junk,” said Arlene Peters, who lives in southwest Mankato.

Peters’ son, James Peters, added his mother’s flood-damaged mattress to the growing piles of household waste. Last week, 16 inches of water filled the basement of Arlene Peters’ home in southwest Mankato.

“Normally I don’t get water in my basement, but it came so quickly,” Arlene Peters said.

It was an unwelcome surprise for Peters to arrive home on Sunday after a trip north.

“Not so happy,” said Peters.

With only two inches of water in his home near the Blue Earth and Minnesota rivers, Nathan Steckman, Lorna Kumar’s son, is here to deliver one of the many loads of flood-damaged items.

“I had to pull the floor out. We had a lot of damage,” Steckman said.

“Curtains, picture frames, it could hold a few blankets,” Kumar said.

Despite the damage to their homes and property, Peters and Steckman say they were lucky.

“It could have been a lot worse. My heart goes out to everyone who is underwater right now,” Steckman said.

They hope for a speedy recovery for friends and neighbors.
