The neighbor of the Rochester Hills shooting suspect describes witnessing a police standoff

(CBS DETROIT) – Neighbors say the gunman suspected of wounding nine peopleincluding two children, was quiet at a splash pad in Rochester Hills on Saturday, keeping to himself and not really engaging with those around him.

“Who knows what his plans were? He could have come back, you know. Some neighbors thought he might originally want to do something with us around here, but there was no one around, so he left,” says Michelle Wheeler , a neighbor of the suspected shooter, 42-year-old Michael William Nash of Shelby Township.

After the shooting, the suspect fled and drove to his home. Authorities surrounded the barricaded home in Shelby Township and a standoff ensued. The suspect later died by suicide following the standoff.

While the suspect was barricaded, police evacuated Wheeler and forced her to another part of the mobile home park where she had to monitor everything from her security cameras.

Wheeler says she has only lived there for about a year, but the shooter’s neighbor, Kyleen Duchene-McDougall, says she has lived next door for 20 years.

‘He was just quiet. I keep calling him a kid because we’ve been here for twenty years. He is 42; I don’t know how that happened. But just quiet. He hasn’t worked since COVID. He just stays in the house; all curtains are always closed; there are never any blinds or anything open, and he keeps to himself,” Duchene-McDougall said.

Duchene-McDougall says the conversations between her and the shooter’s mother were always informal, and she says the shooter’s father passed away a few years ago.

“I don’t know why or what he was involved in as far as his mental state. She never shared that with me. It was just more of, ‘Hello, how are you?’ said Duchene-McDougall.
