A low pressure system in the eastern tropical Atlantic Ocean could develop into the next tropical depression of the season by the end of the week, the National Hurricane Center said.
A well-defined low-pressure area several hundred kilometers west of the Cape Verde Islands currently has a limited chance of developing over the next few days but could become better organized by the end of the week, NHC said.
“This system is currently embedded in an unfavorable environment and no development is expected in the coming days,” forecasters said. “However, this system is forecast to move generally westward to west-southwestward, and environmental conditions could become more favorable for further development by the middle of this week.”
Forecasters say the system could become the next tropical depression of the season as it begins moving west-northwestward and approaches the Leeward Islands.
NHC gives the system only a 10% chance of formation in the next two days, but a 40% chance in the next seven days.
The system follows Hurricanes Helene and Milton, which crashed into Florida’s Gulf Coast just two weeks apart, leaving a trail of destruction across multiple states.
The hurricane season, which began on June 1 and runs through November 30, has produced thirteen named storms so far. If this system develops into the next named storm, it will be named Nadine.
