PATERSON, NJ — The Paterson Police Department is once again under local control.
A New Jersey appeals court ruled Wednesday that Attorney General Matt Platkin exceeded his authority he took over the Paterson Police Department in March 2023.
Court also says deposed chief Bert Ribeiro needs to be repaired.
Platkin, who says he will appeal the decision, then took over the Paterson Police Department officers fatally shot Najee Seabrookswho suffered a mental health crisis after an hours-long standoff.
Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh praised the ruling. In a statement he said:
“This decision is a victory for local government and the city of Paterson. As twice duly elected Mayor of Paterson, I have always maintained that the Attorney General’s takeover was both illegal and unconstitutional. This ruling reaffirms our city’s authority to manage its own police force. department and sets a precedent for all municipalities in NJ that police accountability rests with local officials elected by the people.

At the time, the acquisition was praised by some Paterson residents who accused the department of police brutality.
During the takeover, the attorney general said his office had conducted a “full diagnostic of the department.” implemented new training courses focused on constitutional, compassionate policing.
“I think it’s an overall reimagining of how we can ensure public safety in Paterson and ultimately restore trust in the community,” Platkin said in April 2023.
