The Pricey Flames forward is getting crushed in the hockey news writers’ poll

Jonathan Huberdeau didn’t fare very well in The Hockey News’ recent polls ahead of the 2024-2025 NHL season.

Most fans know that Huberdeau has not fulfilled his contract since coming to Calgary and signing an eight-year contract worth $10.5 million per season. Huberdeau scored 115 points in his final season with the Florida Panthers. He was traded to Calgary in a deal where the Panthers acquired Matthew Tkachuk, and since Huberdeau’s arrival he has had 55-point and 52-point seasons.

Not surprisingly, Huberdeau didn’t fare well in some of the survey questions asked of writers here at The Hockey News.

The most overpaid player in the NHL

Darnell Nurse was in first place, but Huberdeau came in second, receiving 16 of the 56 votes. He was followed by Pierre-Luc Dubois and Marc-Edouard Vlasic. This isn’t a great company to be in, and the hope is that he can explode offensively this season and move lower down the roster, or even beyond.

Which player or team’s bad season was an indicator of reality?

When asked which bad season was more indicative of real life than a fluke the player could recover from, Huberdeau ranked first as the only deal that will be bad for the Flames from here on out.

Interestingly, second, third and fourth places were for teams. Pittsburgh, Seattle and, unsurprisingly, the Calgary Flames were also in the top five as voters assumed these teams were doomed.

MacKenzie Weegar also made this list.

In terms of potential trades this season, both Nazem Kadri and Weegar were on the Flames’ list. Kadri received four votes and Wegar received two.
