NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE A red flag warning issued this morning has expired.

Update, 5 p.m

Today’s red flag warning has expired as of 5 p.m

Previous coverage The National Weather Service today issued a red flag warning for the leeward areas of all Hawaiian Islands, warning of hazardous fire conditions due to locally strong trade winds and low relative humidity.

The warning is in effect from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and applies to the leeward portions of the islands of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui and Hawaii. Wind speeds are expected to range from 20 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph, the NWS said. Relative humidity can drop to 40 to 45 percent.

Weather officials warn that the combination of high winds, dry fuels and low humidity could lead to extreme fire behavior. Fires that ignite can spread quickly, but the warning does not predict new fires.

Residents are advised to avoid outdoor fires and park vehicles in areas where there is no dry vegetation, as exhaust systems can cause fires. In addition, activities that could cause sparks should be postponed until the wind subsides.
