SACRAMENTO – A new lioness now calls the Sacramento Zoo home.
On Friday, zoo officials announced they had welcomed Binti to Sacramento.
The four-year-old lioness comes from the Detroit Zoo as part of the Lion Species Survival Plan – an initiative by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums to manage the reproduction of the African lion, a species listed as endangered.
In October, the Sacramento Zoo announced that their 19-year-old African lioness Cleo had died. Cleo had been calling the Sacramento Zoo since she was two.
The Sacramento Zoo previously welcomed a three-year-old male African lion named Slamson II in 2024.
Currently, zookeepers say Binti and Slamson II are switching habitats. The goal is to introduce the couple in the future.
Binti was the first lion cub born at the Detroit Zoo in four decades, officials said.
