NEW YORK– The ship at Hudson Yards will reopen Monday with new safety features.
The 50-meter-high building with climbable zigzagging stairs was closed in 2021 after a series of suicide deaths.
It is reopening and floor-to-ceiling steel mesh barriers have been installed in some areas. The top level remains closed.
“Not a day goes by that we don’t have visitors walking up to our staff asking where they can buy tickets and when it will reopen,” said Jeff T. Blau, CEO of Related Companies, which owns Hudson Yards. “That interest has not diminished in the time we have been closed and we are excited to welcome guests from around the world back to the ship with additional safety measures in place.”
The ship first opened in 2019as the centerpiece of the Hudson Yards development on Manhattan’s West Side.
The interactive artwork closed in 2021 after several people died by suicide. It was eventually reopened, but only on the ground floor.
“Through a closely coordinated effort with Thomas Heatherwick and Heatherwick Studio, we have developed a plan to install floor-to-ceiling steel mesh on the ship while maintaining the unique experience that has attracted millions of visitors from around the world,” says a spokesperson for Hudson Yards said when the further reopening was announced in April.
The ship was designed by Thomas Heatherwick and manufactured in Venice. Tickets are required for entry.
