SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY — A California highway connecting the Bay Area to the Central Valley was closed Saturday afternoon after high winds caused a crash, while eastbound Interstate 80 in the Sierra was shut down due to spinouts, officials said.
Caltrans said Interstate 580 was closed in both directions at the San Joaquin and Alameda county line after a multi-vehicle collision involving a big rig due to high winds. The closure extends to Interstate 5.
The highway will remain closed until the winds subside and vehicles can stand upright, Caltrans said.
The fire brigade hopes to have the highway open again around 5 p.m
This isn’t the only major highway closed on Saturday. Interstate 80 and Highway 50 in the Sierra will be closed for a few hours Saturday morning.
Saturday afternoon, around 3 p.m., Caltrans said eastbound I-80 was at a standstill at Castle Peak due to multiple spinouts from Donner Summit.
Traffic on Highway 50 was also held east of Kyburz and Echo Summit in El Dorado County due to spinouts.
All Sierra highways have chain checks and Caltrans tells drivers to expect major delays.
A tornado touched down in Scotts Valleya town near Santa Cruz on Saturday afternoon, overturning cars and downing power lines, authorities said.
This came next San Francisco saw its first-ever tornado warning issued by the National Weather Service. A tornado never formed strong winds caused collisions around the area.
