The Supreme Court must decide abortion, guns, immunity and much more

The Supreme Court is set to issue its next set of opinions Thursday morning, with most of the term’s biggest rulings still pending on abortion, guns, Donald Trump’s criminal immunity and more.

The justices do not announce rulings in advance, and opinion days are scheduled on a rolling basis until the decisions are made, which is typically late June but could extend into July. The court will also give its ruling on Friday.

This is what we look at:

And that’s not all. Far from it. It requires rulings on environmental protections, the power of federal agencies, social media, homelessness and the multibillion-dollar Purdue Pharma opioid bankruptcy settlement. Even that heavy list doesn’t take into account all the remaining cases, including a call for free speech that also somehow indirectly implicates Trump, over the trademarking of the phrase “Trump Too Small” for T-shirts.

Given everything the court has to decide besides immunity, combined with the lack of haste to hear arguments in that case, it’s not surprising that the justices haven’t decided that yet. And ruling based on a compressed timeline doesn’t always lead to the court’s best work, as we saw in the 14th Amendment vote earlier this year, which allowed Trump to run again despite his involvement in the insurrection of 6 January.

But most of all, this summary shows that the court will once again issue rulings that touch on seemingly every aspect of American life — beyond just Trump, though he looms large on the court’s carefully selected docket.
