The suspect who shot and killed MPD Officer Jamal Mitchell had a criminal record and was wanted on weapons charges

MINNEAPOLIS— Officials have identified the man who fatally shot a police officer outside a south Minneapolis apartment complex Thursday during a chaotic mass shooting that left four injured and one civilian dead, as well as the gunman.

According to police, Mustafa Ahmed Mohamed ambushed a police officer Jamal Mitchell prior to the shootout in the Whittier neighborhood. Mitchell had responded to a shots fired call at the apartment and was assisting Mohamed, when Mohamed turned on the officer and shot him.

Mohamed, 35, was convicted of first-degree burglary in 2007 and banned from carrying a firearm. He had an active warrant out for his arrest following a 2022 incident in which police saw him with a gun at the scene of a robbery in downtown Minneapolis, according to court documents.

Mohamed is said to have hidden the weapon behind a pillar when he saw the police arriving. When police chased him, he tossed aside a gun holster and was arrested at the scene.

On Thursday, officials said Mohamed continued to shoot Mitchell after he fell to the ground. Officers returned fire and shot Mohamed, who died at the scene. He died of multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner.

A civilian – later identified as 32 year old Osman Jimale – was found dead in the apartment. Another civilian in the building was injured, as was a man sitting in his car outside the building. A Minneapolis officer and firefighter were also injured.

A monument is growing outside Minneapolis’ 5th Precinct in honor of Mitchell, who joined the Minneapolis Police Department in 2022 with the goal of changing relations between the community and police. Originally from Connecticut, Mitchell was a father of three and engaged to be married.

On Saturday, the Apostle Supper Club will host a barbecue from noon to 8 p.m collect money for Mitchell’s family. The Minneapolis Police Officers Federation, Law Enforcement Labor Services and the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association will do that collect donations through the LELS Benevolent Fund, with all proceeds going to Mitchell’s loved ones.
