The threat of severe thunderstorms resumes in the tri-state area on Sunday

New York City and the surrounding tri-state area are once again facing the threat of severe thunderstorms this weekend as temperatures are expected to soar into the 90s.

The National Weather Service said “strong to severe” thunderstorms could hit the city in the late afternoon and evening Sunday, with damaging winds the main threat.

Showers are expected between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m., which could cause “flash flooding and locally damaging wind gusts,” AccuWeather said.

There may also be some showers with heavy rainfall on Saturday evening, but these are not expected to be serious.

In New Jersey, nearly the entire state is reportedly at risk for flash flooding on Sunday, though the risk is listed as “low,” according to News 12 New Jersey. There is also the rare possibility of tornadoes, with the storms and high winds.

For Connecticut, temperatures are also expected to be warm and humid, rising to the low 90s on Sunday and a level 2 out of 5 risk of severe weather on Sunday.

The forecast comes as thousands across the three states reportedly lost power on Friday afternoon, following heavy thunderstorms on Wednesday evening.

More than 2,500 people in New York state were still without power as of Saturday afternoon, according to PowerOutage.us. More than 2,100 New Jersey residents were also still without power on Saturday.

In Connecticut, more than a thousand people were still without power as of 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

Looking ahead to next week, temperatures in the region are expected to be in the 80s, with clear skies until more rain next weekend.
