The victim took out a protective order against the suspect before he was killed by police

A woman has filed a domestic violence protection order against a man who was shot by police at a Newton mall Tuesday morning.

PAST OPERATION: Man killed during shootout with officers, police say

The victim claimed her boyfriend at the time pulled a gun and fired a shot to threaten her.

“I am afraid for my life and for my daughters and for anyone who stands in his way,” she wrote in court documents.

Four shells hit the victim’s car as she drove away from Robinson on Tuesday morning.

She managed to reach the Market Place shopping center, where police said Robinson followed her and began shooting at police and an ambulance.

Officers returned fire, hitting Robinson, who later died at a hospital.

Two Newton police officers, a Catawba sheriff’s deputy and a Conover police officer fired their weapons. The SBI is still conducting interviews in the case but is expected to meet with the prosecutor soon.

‘Your safety comes first’

Robert Dalton is executive director of the Family Guidance Center in Hickory, which serves 1,500 women and children annually who are victims of domestic violence.

“So the first thing we always say is, ‘your safety comes first,’” Dalton said. “So if you’re in a domestic violence situation, leaving is the most dangerous moment for a victim.”

The Family Guidance Center has a shelter and crisis line that helps families in Catawba County.

The victim was issued a domestic violence protective order in March in Alexander County after alleging repeated incidents of abuse dating back to 2022, according to court documents.

However, nine days later she asked the judge to dismiss the case.

Dalton said this is not uncommon in domestic violence cases.
