A South Carolina man was charged with attempted murder and other crimes after a knife attack outside a Lexington County bar, according to Chapin police.
Jacob Adam Riddle, a Newberry County resident, was also charged with second-degree assault and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, police said in a news release Monday.
The attack happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday, the news release said. It happened in the parking lot of the Tipsy Toad Tavern at 103 Beaufort Street, police said. That’s in the heart of Chapin, not far from Exit 91 on Interstate 26.
Riddle was seen stabbing the victim in the back, prompting another individual to try to get Riddle off the victim, the release said. During the struggle, the second person was also cut with the knife, police said.
After they were separated, Riddle drove away before police arrived, the release said.
The stabbing victim was taken to Lexington Medical Center with what police called “non-life-threatening injuries.” No further information about the victim’s condition was available, and there was no word if the second person who was cut required medical attention.
Officers responding to the stabbing identified Riddle as the suspect through the combination of evidence collected in the bar’s parking lot and statements from several witnesses, police said.
With the assistance of the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office, police took Riddle into custody at his home in Little Mountain, the release said.
He was arrested Monday and is being held at the Lexington County Detention Center, jail records show. No bond has been set, according to jail records.
There was no word on a motive for the attack, or whether Riddle and the victim knew each other before the incident.
