These Two Celtics Who Reached Out About Selecting Baylor Scheierman ‘Meant A Lot’ originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston
Baylor Scheierman has been warmly welcomed by the Boston Celtics organization.
The former Creighton wing was selected by the Celtics on Wednesday night with the final pick (No. 30 overall) in the first round of the 2024 NBA Draft.
In addition to Brad Stevens, the Celtics’ president of basketball operations, and Joe Mazzulla, a few players also contacted Scheierman after the pick was made. The 23-year-old rookie was very happy with that.
“Last night Brad (Stevens) contacted me and I talked to him. I had a couple of guys contact me, Jayson (Tatum) and Al (Horford), and coach (Joe) Mazzulla too. That meant a lot to me ,” Scheierman told reporters on a Zoom call Thursday afternoon, as seen in the video player above.
“I’m really looking forward to being there and meeting everyone. I’m trying to be a sponge, learn from everyone and absorb as much information as possible so I can grow as a player.”
What can Celtics fans expect from Scheierman on the court?
“I’m a hard worker. I love to work and I love to compete. I like to impact the game in any way I can,” Scheierman said. “I like to impact winning, whether it’s diving down, making threes, blocking shots, whatever it may be. I like to have fun while I’m doing it. Basketball is obviously a game that you have to enjoy. When I’m on the court, I like to have fun and compete.”

Scheierman averaged 18.5 points and nine rebounds per game for his career, while also shooting an impressive 38.1 percent from 3-point range last season.
He is actually the only player in Division I men’s history with at least 2,000 points (2,233), 1,000 rebounds (1,256), 500 assists (580) and 300 3-pointers (356).
Before hiring Scheierman on Wednesday, the Celtics hadn’t made a first-round pick since 2020.
