‘Thought it was safe:’ Neighbors, locals respond to deadly shooting that left two young people dead on Sunday

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is investigating a double shooting that left two juveniles dead. It happened around 4:30 a.m. at the Island Pointe Apartments on Northwide

The Island Pointe Apartments on the north side were supposed to be a quiet area, but that silence was broken early Sunday morning.

One resident told Action News Jax she woke up to dozens of police cars right in front of her home, but she said she didn’t hear any gunshots.

A woman who asked to remain anonymous said she was shocked.

“We moved here because we thought it was safe. There is only one way in and one way out. If you come by here, it is because you are visiting someone or because you are coming home,” she said.

Another resident said she saw 22 evidence markers on the ground.

Police said they do not believe the two victims lived at the apartment complex, and it is still unclear what led to the incident.

AJ Jordan of MAD DADS believes this is yet another example of kids getting their hands on guns.

“We still have a part of the community that still wants to use guns and solve problems with violence. We need to get people off the streets and have an important conversation with our young people,” Jordan said.

According to the JSO crime map, this is the first shooting within a 2 mile radius of the area in the past.
