EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Thousands of delegates will be in El Paso from Thursday, June 6 to Saturday, June 8 for the Texas Democratic Convention.
During this time, several high-profile state and national political leaders will speak with party members during training sessions and advocacy meetings.
The first evening featured a kick-off reception where former Congressman and presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke, former Congressman Gabby Giffords, Rep. Veronica EscobarSenator César Blanco, chairman of the Democratic Party of Texas Gilberto Hinojosa and others all spoke to launch the event.
“We know that we have a huge task in November. And that is to elect the Democrats up and down, to re-elect Joe Biden, to elect Paul and already get into the United States Senate, win enough seats to finally flip the Texas House and put the Democrats here in El Paso County,” Hinojosa said when asked about his main goal for the convention.
Hinojosa said their party would focus on voter engagement and empowerment.
“It is incredibly exciting to see Democrats from across the state, from rural communities, urban communities and all parts of the great state of Texas, coming to our community and El Paso to gather to debate our priorities,” said Rep. Escobar .
Escobar said she hoped the convention will include productive dialogue on bodily autonomy, immigration reform, housing and full education funding.
It’s been more than two decades since the Texas Democratic Convention was held in El Paso.
Hinojosa said given the city’s leadership, it made sense for Sun City to host this year’s meeting.
“It’s a great Democratic city. [The] The leadership here has done a great job promoting and marketing El Paso as a great city for hosting a convention. And if we hadn’t been here for 22 years. So it was about time,” Hinojosa said.
