Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of France on Saturday to protest the appointment of Michel Barnier as prime minister.
Authorities expected about 15,000 people to take part in demonstrations in more than 100 cities across the country, including Paris, Bordeaux and Nantes.
The protests were organised by the far-left France Unbowed party, one of the members of the Nouveau Popular Front (NPF) alliance, which won the second round of parliamentary elections in July.
The NPF has reacted angrily after French President Emmanuel Macron refused to nominate its candidate for prime minister and this week chose conservative Barnier to try to form a government.
When Barnier took office on Thursday evening, he announced a new political course for France. However, it is still unclear which parties the 73-year-old president wants to govern with.
There have already been suggestions that Barnier may have to turn to the far right for support.
