CHICAGO (CBS) — Thousands of people lined up on Chicago’s Near West Side on Sunday for a historic election in Mexico. It is the first time that people can vote in person here.

Some described the process as ‘disorganised’, a ‘mess’ and a ‘disaster’.

Thousands of people stood in long lines. There were so many people that the police closed the streets to traffic around 11 a.m

Around 5:30 PM, some just around the corner from the entrance said they had been waiting there since 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM with very little forward movement. They said there was very little communication about what was happening, how long they would have to wait and their chances of casting their vote.

They were there when the country was expected to vote for its first female president. The top contenders are Claudia Sheinbaum and Xóchitl Gálvez.

“I got here around 9 a.m. and it was honestly a disaster,” said Jose Antonio Urban. “It’s been very disorganized. And yes, we don’t know. I’m not sure I can cast my vote.

Some in line left early.

“In one place in two hours, maybe ten steps,” said Ricardo Rodriguez, who left without voting.

One of the lucky ones who made it all the way to cast their vote spoke to CBS 2.

“That’s the proof. The proof is there. Eight hours of waiting for my vote, but finally I got it,” said Carlos Patino.
