Thousands of people pack the Alameda County Fair despite the heat

Much of the inland Bay Area was under a heat advisory Saturday, including Pleasanton, home of the Alameda County Fair.

But the daylong heat wave didn’t stop thousands of people from filling the fairgrounds, although Daniel Rosales did consider staying home.

“We almost didn’t come,” Rosales said. “At the point of turning around there were a hundred of them. But the children wouldn’t let us come.’

The elevated temperatures brought a moderate risk of heat-related illness, but many people found ways to cope.

“Beer and a straw hat, we’ll be fine,” Rosales said.

Richard Chavez even bought souvenirs for his entire family to help out.

“We did buy some of those spray fans that are sold here,” Chavez said. “I shouldn’t say there are a few, everyone has bought one. We have about ten.”

Other popular spots to beat the heat included a water slide, mist tents and a shaved ice stand.

But employee Canon Moyer says the heat may not help their business as much as people think.

“People here come to buy shaved ice, but other than that, I think the heat is keeping people away from the fair this weekend,” Moyer said of the heat. “It was pretty slow yesterday too.”

But those who did eventually came out and decided to embrace the heat.

‘It’s hot! You have to enjoy the heat,” Rosales said. “This is what you’ve been waiting all year for, summer. It’s time to come out.”

According to him, even a hot day at the trade fair is better than a day at the office.
