Nov. 10—PENDLETON — Halloween came and went more than a week ago, marking the start of the Christmas season for some.
Thousands flocked to Falls Park Saturday for a display of holiday spirit during the annual Christmas in Pendleton event.
Families were decked out in holiday attire, including “ugly” Christmas sweaters, elf hats and winter gear, as they took part in activities such as ax throwing, snowball fights and carriage rides.
In addition to the activities, people were able to browse the wares sold by more than 140 food and craft vendors at the event, including a donut smash burger.
Christmas in Pendleton serves as the town’s annual holiday kickoff event and has done so for years.
Niki Brown, event coordinator for Christmas in Pendleton, said the event started about 30 years ago when she was preparing to graduate from high school.
“(It’s about) getting excited about this time of year,” she said. “I think this time of year everyone is starting to get the itch (to celebrate).”
In fact, she says it’s a chance to celebrate what makes the holidays special: giving.
Eight young women were recognized for their philanthropic activities throughout the year at the 2024 Snow Queen Court Contest.
The young ladies were divided into three categories: Snow Queen, Princess and Junior Princess, depending on their level.
Savanna Hatton, 11, was crowned in the princess category.
Hatton enjoys serving others and participates in various programs, including the Best Buddies program at her school, Pendleton Elementary.
The Best Buddies program aims to break down barriers between people with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities, according to the Best Buddies International Indiana website.
Hatton was crowned by 16-year-old Lauren Pemberton, the 2023 Snow Queen.
Pemberton and her family settled in Pendleton last summer after living in Maine for a while. Her family is friends with MeLita Delk, who oversees the competition and suggests Pemberton give it a try.
“I love being involved in the community and that fits with the title of Snow Queen,” Pemberton said, explaining why she decided to enter the competition.
Pemberton is involved in children’s ministries at her church and with the youth group. She hopes to work in some kind of ministry after high school.
