MINNEAPOLIS— Gov. Tim Walz made his first appearance as a vice presidential candidate Monday night, speaking with Jimmy Kimmel about topics as diverse as gun violence, hot dish recipes and Diet Mountain Dew.

Walz’s interview on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” took place the same night he and Vice President Kamala Harris were interviewed on “60 minutes”, and the following week he debated Senator J.D. Vance.

The governor of Minnesota began the interview by acknowledging the date: October 7, one year ago the Hamas attack on Israel which killed 1,200 people. Walz said he and Harris are committed to “ensuring that this never happens again, that Israel is safe and that the hostages are brought home and that the humanitarian crisis in Gaza ends.”

The show then moved on to other topics, such as Walz’s time working in schools. Kimmel asked Walz what he wants the American people to remember about his childhood social studies classes, which was Walz’s subject when he was a teacher.

“This idea that we might have different ideas, but we have unity, love democracy, have elections and then shake hands and admit that the person who won won,” Walz said.

Kimmel also made sure to include some jokes. When Walz said he planned to “wake up with Madam President on November 6th,” Kimmel joked, “I want to be clear: You will not be waking up together.” Unless you guys got closer than we thought.”

In his “60 Minutes” interviewWalz spoke about his move to a bigger stage on the presidential ticket, and the subsequent criticism he has faced.

“I think people know who I am,” Walz told Whitaker, adding that he believes people know the difference between someone like him and a “pathological liar like Donald Trump.”

Walz’s appearance at Kimmel comes just under a month before Election Day.
