CHICAGO (WTVO) – A 3-year-old boy was struck by a stray gunshot Saturday after an alleged attempted armed robbery.

On December 14, around 4:50 p.m., gunfire rang out in the 1000 block of West 14th Street, wounding a child while he was in a nearby apartment in Little Italy, according to authorities.

The incident began when an armed suspect tried to rob a 20-year-old man in a parking lot near the complex. WLS reported. The shot that injured the toddler was fired into the air, according to police CBS.

The 3-year-old was transported to Stroger Hospital with a wound to his left ear.

The 20-year-old was not injured.

The suspect is not in custody and Area 3 detectives are still investigating the incident.
