Traveler shows inventive solution to avoid excessive baggage fees

An industrious traveler avoided high baggage fees by using an eccentric solution.

A viral video, first reported by The sun, shows an airline passenger named Daniel being questioned about his bag at Palma de Mallorca airport in Spain. Daniel said he had to pay an exorbitant fee of $76 because the bag was slightly larger than Ryanair’s dimensions allowed, and went to extremes.

He spins the wheels of his bag, losing the extra inches and avoiding an additional fee. After Daniel completed the transformation of the bag, the astonished witnesses burst into spontaneous applause. Even Ryanair employees can’t suppress their laughter. Miraculously, the bag now meets the airline’s specifications and Daniel can board the plane.

“I told Ryanair it cost me 30 euros ten years ago, and I wasn’t going to pay the 70 euros they asked me for,” Daniel defiantly told the newspaper. “So I decided to break it,” he explained. “It would have cost me more to check the bag than I spent on the flight.”

While Daniel’s behavior was roundly praised as inventive and as a well-deserved reward for greedy airlines, others were not so convinced of his tactics.

“Unfortunately, this guy will most likely spend the amount on buying new luggage,” one smart commenter wrote.

“It’s going to cost more to buy a new suitcase with wheels,” echoed another.

However, one person had some good travel advice for everyone. “Send your luggage via UPS,” the tipster said. “You save 75 percent on airline baggage fees.”
