Traveling During the Week of July 4th? Here’s What to Expect on the Road and in the Air

BOSTON — Logan Airport and roads around New England are expected to be busy during the week of July 4 as travelers celebrate this iconic summer weekend.

On Wednesday morning, hundreds of travelers headed to the airport to begin their journey. Although lines were short, the airport expects more traffic in the coming days.

The busiest day for air travel

The busiest day for travel was last Friday, with people taking the entire Independence Day week off this year. Nearly 3 million people took to the skies last Friday and 2.8 million on Sunday.

Traveler Franki Devingo, who just arrived in Boston, said she’s most looking forward to “getting on the boat, going to the beach and hanging out” this vacation. She and her roommate, Alyssa Coons, come to New England every year for the Fourth of July.

“[It was] smooth sailing, quick through security, good breakfast,” Coons said. “Arrived here before the sun was really up.”

While it’s a quiet experience for Coons and Devingo, AAA predicts that 71 million people will travel during the 9-day travel period on July 4.

“It was a beautiful day and everything seems to be going well, so I hope I don’t blow it,” said traveler John Carr, who is en route to Maryland.

It will likely be a different story on the roads this year. AAA says Wednesday and Sunday will be jam-packed, especially between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Whether you’re taking a road trip or catching a plane, the same advice applies to anyone who travels frequently: leave early.

Please note that if you fly back to Logan after Independence Day, the Sumner Tunnel to be closed From Friday you may experience additional delays.
