Treat yourself to a cookie in Salem on National Cookie Day

Looking for a reason for a sweet treat?

December 4 is National Cookie Day and there are plenty of bakeries with a wide selection to choose from. If you’re a fan of chocolate, sugar, snickerdoodle, peanut butter, or oatmeal raisin cookies, this is the day for you.

These local spots aren’t offering any special cookie deals for National Cookie Day, but whether you’re craving a traditional chocolate chip cookie or something prepared, you can find more and more at these Salem-area bakeries:

Konditorei by Gerry Frank: Known for its classic pies, there are dozens of slices to choose from in the display cases. But on the left, near the cash register, is a case of cookies, bars and breakfast pastries. You’ll find a general selection of classics like oatmeal raisin, snickerdoodle or shortbread cookies, in addition to seasonal treats like holiday sugar cookies and shortbread cookies. Go to gerryfrankskonditorei.com to get some. The store is closed 310 Kearney St. SE.

The Little Cannoli Bakery: The Italian bakery and café is best known for its pastries, including eclairs, cannoli, Napoleons and croissants, but also offers traditional cookies. Here you will find shortbread, macaroons, biscotti, pizzelle, Italian-style Florentine and mini macaroons. littlecannolibakery.com; 315 High St. SE.

Outside the Manna Bakery cafe.

Bakery Manna: One of the few bakeries in downtown Salem, Manna’s star product is its loaves of delicious sourdough, but its selection of cookies is especially accessible to those with allergens. There is always a cookie or two that is vegan, in addition to the other selections. The varieties available are fairly consistent from day to day, but tend toward lesser-known flavors. These include a miso butter pecan, chocolate hazelnut and rocky road. The cookies are popular and sell out quickly, so I recommend arriving early for yours. Instagram, @mannaoregon. 237 State St.

Cookies available at Sweetly Baked in Salem.

Sweet baked: Sweetly Baked, located in south Four Corners, is known for its kolaches, cupcakes and cookies – especially sugar cookie decorating kits available during the holidays. The seasonal sugar cookie sets are available now, along with standard cookies ranging from Butterfinger, Butter Pecan, Funfetti, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Double Chocolate Chips and more. sweetlybaked.net; 680 Hawthorne Ave. S.E.

What is the US National Cookie?

Although there is no official national cookie in the US, the classic chocolate chip cookie is king.

This is evident from many polls conducted over the years, the most recent of which comes from One Poll’s Crumbl Cookies.

Sixty-two percent of respondents said chocolate chip cookies were their favorite type of cookie, followed by peanut butter, brownie/double chocolate and oatmeal raisin.

Besides, National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day is celebrated annually on August 4.
