Triathlon schedule and location in Paris 2024
The triathlon competition was first introduced at the Olympic Games six Games ago in Sydney 2000, and will take place in the heart of Paris in 2024.
The men’s individual race will take place on July 30, followed by the women’s race on July 31 and the mixed relay on August 5.
They all start on a pontoon on the River Seine under the Pont Alexandre III bridge for the swimming part.
The athletes then follow a route past historic sights in the city center, including the Champs-Elysées, during the cycling and running sessions.
There has been controversy over water quality in the Seine in the run-up to the Games – and the president of Paris 2024 said in April that the swims could be postponed if heavy rain increases pollution levels before the events.
What does triathlon entail and which medals can be won during Paris 2024?
The men’s and women’s individual events are contested as straight medal races, continuously timed with transition areas for clothing and equipment changes after the swimming and cycling events.
The Olympic triathlon distances for both men and women are as follows:
-
1500m swim
-
40 km cycling
-
10 km run
In the mixed relay, two men and two women compete in a short-course triathlon.
Each country is assigned a male-female-male-female challenge, and each athlete taps the hand of their next teammate after completing a course with:
-
300 meters swim
-
5.8 km cycling
-
1.8 km run
Team GB’s triathlon medal hopes in Paris 2024
Great Britain is the most successful triathlon country at the Olympic Games.
GB have won three golds, including victory in the first mixed relay event at the Tokyo Games when Jess Learmonth, Jonny Brownlee, Georgia Taylor-Brown and Alex Yee triumphed.
Taylor-Brown and Yee both won individual silver in Tokyo.
Yee and Potter, who became world champions last year, were the first British triathletes selected for Paris in November.
The final British triathlon team will be confirmed on June 10, with a total of three women and two men.
