Triple-digit heat is expected in LA County starting Friday

Heat will start in the triple digits in some parts of Los Angeles County starting Friday and continuing into early next week, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a heat advisory this weekend.

It will be in effect from 10 a.m. Saturday to 8 p.m. Sunday for the Santa Clarita, San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys, where forecasters say temperatures could reach 101 degrees.

Experts say it’s important to drink plenty of water and protect your skin from the heat.

“One sunburn in a lifetime can double your chances of developing melanoma,” says Dr. Anna Guanche, dermatologist and founder of the Bella Skin Institute. “Melanoma is the most deadly form of skin cancer.”

She said the UV index will determine how likely you are to get sunburned during a heat wave.

“If the UV index is between 3 and 5, it can take 30-45 minutes to burn,” she added. “If there are 11 or more, the damage can occur in less than 10 minutes.”

An excessive heat warning will be in effect Saturday morning through Sunday evening in the San Gabriel Mountains, the Antelope Valley foothills and the 14 Freeway corridor.

According to the NWS, temperatures will rise each day over the weekend, with above-normal temperatures expected starting Friday, followed by the possibility of “dangerously warm conditions” over the weekend, “particularly for the mountain areas and Antelope Valley.”

Daytime high temperatures are expected to rise 2 to 6 degrees, pushing highs in the Antelope Valley around 100 to 105 degrees, and into the 80s and 90s across the valleys.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has issued a heat advisory for the Valley areas for Saturday and Sunday.

Sunday will remain the same, but forecasters say the heat could ease slightly and last into Monday.
