Trump does not file any paperwork for the Libertarian Party to consider after requesting votes

WASHINGTON — Hours after former President Donald Trump asked libertarians for their party’s nomination and votes, the party chairman said he had not filed the proper paperwork.

“I have also learned that Mr. Trump has not filed any nomination papers,” Libertarian Party Chair Angela McArdle announced to delegates on Sunday. “But he was nominated, and it’s nice to be nominated.”

Moments earlier, the crowd at the Libertarian National Convention mocked the man Trump nominated for consideration.

“I would like to nominate the greatest president of our time, Donald J. Trump,” the libertarian said as the crowd of delegates booed loudly in response.

Another man walked up to a microphone to argue that Trump was ineligible for nomination, to which the audience responded with applause and a partial standing ovation.

Asked for comment, a Trump campaign spokesman pointed to Trump’s post on Truth Social.

“The reason I didn’t file any paperwork for the Libertarian Nomination, which I absolutely would have gotten if I wanted (as everyone could see from the Crowd’s enthusiasm last night!), was the fact that, as a Republican Nominee, I should not have a nomination from any other party,” he said in the post.

The Republican National Committee did not immediately respond to a request to clarify party rules.

The audience heckled Trump during his speech Saturday evening, sometimes swearing and insulting him. Certain parts of his remarks, such as his statement that he did not start any new wars while in office, were received with applause.

Trump asked the public several times to nominate or vote for him. However, the public was consistently hostile towards him, especially when he suggested that they support him.

“I think you should nominate me or at least vote for me,” Trump said Saturday evening. The crowd cheered.

There is a history of New York’s Conservative Party nominating Trump in 2016 and in 2020, while maintaining his Republican nomination. Trump was not the Libertarian nominee in 2016 or 2020.

The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for clarification on Trump’s previous dual nominations in New York.
