Trump announced on Saturday that he is eavesdropping on Florida Republican Sheriff Chad Chronister serve as administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said Chronister “will work with our great Attorney General, Pam Bondi, to secure the border and stop the flow of fentanyl and other illegal drugs across the southern border.”
Bondi, the former attorney general of Florida, is Trump’s choice direct the Ministry of Justice. She was chosen after Trump’s previous selection, former Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, withdrew his appointment amid a House Ethics Committee investigation into allegations against him of sexual misconduct.
Chronister has been sheriff of Hillsborough County in Florida since 2017 and has been with the agency for 32 years. Hillsborough County includes much of the Tampa Bay area.
If confirmed by the Senate, he would replace retiring DEA Administrator Anne Milgram.
The DEA, part of the Justice Department, has approximately 10,000 employees and is charged with enforcing U.S. drug laws. One of the most important edicts is addressing the opioid crisis.
In an interview with “60 Minutes” in September, Milgram said the US is “losing a generation” to fentanyl.
“No matter how complex and grand the problem is, it is not a whodunit. We know who is responsible,” Milgram said. “They are the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco Cartel based in Mexico. They dominate and control the entire global fentanyl supply chain, starting in China, through Mexico, all the way to the United States.”
