Two dead in murder-suicide at Rochester nursing home

Two people have died in what police are describing as a murder-suicide at a Rochester nursing home.

At approximately 7:35 a.m., Rochester Police responded to reports of a possible shooting at the Pearl Nursing Center, located at 1335 Portland Ave. Firefighters from the Rochester Fire Department, who were already on scene for an unrelated medical call, reported hearing gunshots, which was relayed to the 911 center.

The incident prompted a large-scale response from local, state and federal law enforcement, as well as emergency medical services. Authorities systematically evacuated the building and determined that there was no ongoing threat.

Investigators found two deceased persons at the scene: a 94-year-old woman and a 70-year-old man, both with gunshot wounds to their upper bodies. According to police, the man had been visiting the woman at the facility. During the visit, he shot the woman before turning the gun on himself.

The Rochester Major Crimes Homicide Unit is investigating and urges anyone with information to call 911, the Major Crimes Unit at (585) 428-7157, Crime Stoppers at (585) 423-9300, or email email to MajorCrimes@cityofrochester.gov.
