Two earthquakes rock Newport Beach within minutes of each other

Two back-to-back earthquakes rocked Orange County Thursday afternoon.

The first earthquake occurred at about 4:52 p.m., about 2 miles away from Newport Beach, and was about 7.8 miles (12.24 kilometers) deep, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The second, a preliminary magnitude of 3.4, occurred a few minutes later, 2.4 miles (3.9 kilometers) from Newport Beach, relatively close to the first quake. It had the same depth of about 7.64 miles.
