Two municipal councilors from the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party were attacked on Saturday by masked assailants outside a café in the city center of Karlsruhe, in the south-west of the country.
Three people, including the two council members, were slightly injured, a police spokesman in Karlsruhe told dpa late on Saturday.
The three were treated at the scene. The police have provisionally arrested five people and released them after determining their personal details. Other suspected perpetrators fled the scene.
The AfD said the city council members were attacked with a baseball bat. According to police, a stick was found at the scene.
Whether a baseball bat was also used cannot be confirmed or denied, the police spokesperson said.
According to the AfD in the Karlsruhe city council, the attack came from the radical left scene. About ten people are believed to be involved.
The police were initially unable to provide details.
“Only thanks to the courageous intervention of the security personnel at the next table could worse be prevented,” the local AfD representation on the Karlsruhe city council said in a statement.
