Two Los Angeles Police Department officers have been hospitalized after being injured during a chase that culminated in a violent crash in the Westlake District early Monday.

The chase began around 3:30 a.m. and ended a short time later near the intersection of Seventh Street and Union Avenue, the department said.

They say the chase started after they heard a carjacking suspect was armed with a gun. The crime in question allegedly occurred on Sunday and related to the theft of a scooter, police said.

During the pursuit of the suspect, the officers fell, injuring both. While it has not yet been confirmed what they crashed into, video from the scene showed an LAPD patrol car stopped near a light pole and a parked SUV that had significant rear-end damage.

Both officers were taken to a hospital in stable condition, the department said. Both suffered injuries that could be considered minor.
