Two major high school events will block roads in Elk Grove this week. What you need to know

Motorists should expect closures and detours in the afternoon as two high schools take the streets of Elk Grove in celebration.

Elk Grove High School, the city’s oldest, will begin its homecoming parade through the streets Friday at 12:45 p.m. The Thundering Herd varsity team will take the field against the Laguna Creek Cardinals at 5 p.m.

According to the city, motorists can expect lane closures along Elk Grove Boulevard and Elk Grove-Florin Road as students march to celebrate this annual tradition.

Lanes are closed on the following streets:

Valley Oak Drive at Elk Grove High School to Vista Grande Way

Elk Grove-Florin Road in both directions at Elk Grove High School to Elk Grove Boulevard

Elk Grove Boulevard in both directions from Elk Grove Florin Road to Williamson Drive

Melroselaan

Drive south side

Police will use traffic controls and diversions during the parade, which is expected to end around 3 p.m.

The next day, beginning at 10 a.m., Franklin High School will host the 12th FHS Invitational Band Review, an annual fundraising event for Franklin’s band program that invites other high schools in Northern California to compete for best band.

The following roads are closed due to the event:

Franklin High Road from the Franklin Library entrance to Coop Drive

McLean Drive, Jefjen Way and Clairina Way at their intersections with Franklin High Road

Whitelock Parkway remains open to motorists, the city said. The competition is expected to end at 3 p.m
