Two more charged in connection with the Oct. 12 shooting on Jefferson Street

Nashville police arrested two men in connection with the Oct. 12 shooting on Jefferson Street that left one dead and nine others injured.

Corey Johnson, 31, and Kiyahn Hayes-Woods, 23, were taken into custody Wednesday in the 300 block of Berry Street. Police said Hayes-Wood was carrying a semi-automatic handgun at the time of the arrest.

Police said both Johnson and Hayes-Woods were involved in the fatal shooting that occurred hours after Tennessee State University’s Homecoming parade.

Hayes-Woods is charged with felony reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon and unlawful possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. Johnson is being held in lieu of $80,000 bail. Hayes-Woods is being held in lieu of $94,000 bail.

Police said five men with ties to a local gang began shooting at each other at the intersection of 27th Avenue North and Jefferson Street after 5 p.m. on October 12.

One of the five, Vonquae Johnson, 24, was fatally struck and died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Police said Corey Johnson and Hayes-Woods were with Vonquae Johnson at the time of the shooting.

Marquez Davis and DeAnthony Brown, both 24, were arrested Oct. 14 and charged with murder in connection with the killing of Vonquae Johnson. Davis was federally charged with possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

The victims’ injuries ranged from critical to minor abrasions. A 12-year-old girl and two 14-year-old girls were in non-critical condition at Vanderbilt Children’s University Pediatrics. The oldest victim was a 55-year-old woman who was in critical condition and underwent surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The other victims were expected to survive.
