UEFA Super Cup: Kylian Mbappé scores on Real Madrid debut during win over Atalanta

Kylian Mbappé scored his first goal for Real Madrid as the Spanish side defeated Italian Serie A side Atalanta 2-0 to win the UEFA Super Cup in Warsaw, Poland, on Wednesday.

The annual preparation match sees the winners of the Champions League (Real Madrid) and the Europa League (Atalanta) meet before the start of their national competition programmes.

After a quiet first half in which Vinícius Júnior hit the post, Real Madrid took control of the match within the first 20 minutes of the second half. Federico Valverde opened the scoring in the 59th minute and Mbappé made his mark on the game nine minutes later.

Jude Bellingham saw Mbappe cut into space in the Atalanta penalty area and the France star fired the ball into the top right corner for his first goal.

The 25-year-old Mbappé wore the number 9 shirt, previously worn by Real Madrid legends including Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Ronaldo Nazário and Fernando Morientes, and played all 90 minutes in the club’s sixth UEFA Super Cup triumph.

Mbappé joined Real Madrid in June after spending seven seasons in France with Paris Saint-Germain, where he won six Ligue 1 titles, four Coupe de France titles and helped PSG reach the 2019-20 Champions League final.

Mbappe, who now plays for Real Madrid, will reportedly earn $16 million a year after receiving a signing bonus of over $100 million. He is part of a squad that is loaded with world-class talent such as Viní Jr. Bellingham, Rodrygo and Luka Modrić, among many others.

Mbappé and Real Madrid play Mallorca on Saturday as they begin their La Liga campaign and seek their 37th La Liga title and fifth since 2016-17.
