Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a security pact with the European Union during a summit of EU leaders in Brussels on Thursday.
Zelensky signed the agreement at a ceremony together with European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
The EU-Ukraine deal came after months of talks between the 27 EU member states to establish the pact to support the country’s long-term security.
In addition to new plans for closer cooperation between the defense industry in Ukraine and the EU, a new crisis consultation procedure between the EU and Ukraine is part of the pact.
Should Russia attack Ukraine again after the current invasion, or use nuclear weapons during the ongoing war, the EU and Ukraine should hold emergency talks within 24 hours at the request of both sides to discuss possible support.
