Unemployment claims in Michigan fell last week

Initial claims for unemployment benefits in Michigan fell last week compared to the previous week, the U.S. Department of Labor said Thursday.

New unemployment claims, a measure of layoffs, fell to 4,606 in the week ending June 1, down from 7,348 the week before, the Labor Department said.

U.S. unemployment claims rose to 229,000 last week, an increase of 8,000 claims from 221,000 the week before on a seasonally adjusted basis.

North Dakota saw the largest percentage increase in weekly claims, with claims increasing 164.7%. Puerto Rico, meanwhile, saw the largest percentage decline in new claims, with claims down 43.6%.
