Unemployment claims in Michigan fell last week

Initial claims for unemployment benefits in Michigan fell last week compared to the week before, the U.S. Department of Labor said Thursday.

New unemployment claims, a gauge for layoffs, fell to 8,357 in the week ending Oct. 12, down from 16,169 the week before, the Labor Department said.

U.S. unemployment claims fell to 241,000 last week, down 19,000 claims from 260,000 the week before on a seasonally adjusted basis.

Nebraska saw the largest percentage increase in weekly claims, with claims increasing 91.0%. The percentage of new claims was the highest in the Virgin Islands: the number of claims fell by 53.1%.
