Initial claims for unemployment benefits in Michigan increased last week compared to the week before, the U.S. Department of Labor said Thursday.

New unemployment claims, a measure of layoffs, rose to 7,079 in the week ending June 15, up from 6,378 the week before, the Labor Department said.

U.S. unemployment claims fell to 238,000 last week, a decline of 5,000 claims from 243,000 the week before on a seasonally adjusted basis.

Delaware saw the largest percentage increase in weekly claims, with claims increasing 131.2%. The percentage of new claims was the highest in the Virgin Islands: claims fell by 54.7%.
