University of Oregon official on leave after saying he hoped Trump voters would jump off a bridge

A University of Oregon administrator has been placed on leave after a social media post surfaced in which he said he hoped voters who supported President-elect Donald Trump would “jump off a (expletive) bridge” and made other disparaging comments.

Leonard Serrato, associate director of the UO’s fraternity and sorority of life, posted on his Instagram Story on Wednesday telling Trump voters to “go for themselves” and calling them “damn stupid.” The post has now been removed at the request of the university. However, following reporting by the Daily Emerald, several accounts such as Libs or TikTok reuploaded it.

UO officials said they were aware of the post and had begun an investigation, reviewing the matter in the context of university policy and the individual’s role as a public servant.

“The University of Oregon finds the statements in the video abhorrent and inconsistent with our values or mission,” UO said via email. “We appreciate the conflict between his statements, his role in student life at the university and our institutional values.”

Serrato has been deputy director of FSL since 2022 and has worked in higher education for at least eight years.

“As a public university, we take seriously our obligation to provide an environment that welcomes diversity of thought and respect, aligned with our educational mission,” UO said. “While we investigate this, we are providing support to concerned students and staff, including resources for mental and emotional health.”
