Dec. 3—MARIA STEIN — A poultry and beef farm on state Route 119 is applying for a five-year extension of its operating permit from the Ohio Department of Agriculture, according to a news release.
Unrast Poultry, located at 8758 State Route 119 in Maria Stein, has applied to renew the permit for its poultry and steer barns, which together can hold more than 3,150 tons of combined poultry and cattle manure annually.
Under the company’s permit, the poultry manure is stored in the two-tiered stables, which provide more than a year’s manure storage capacity. The cattle manure is stored in the cattle stable and two additional storage stables, which together provide more than a year’s worth of manure storage capacity.
All poultry manure and 40 percent of the cattle manure generated by the facility would be distributed to and used by area farmers, who would recycle the nutrients as an organic alternative to imported commercial synthetic fertilizers.
The remaining 60 percent of the cattle manure would be land applied under the facility’s control to 146 acres of cropland growing corn grains, corn silage, wheat and soybeans.
The Ohio Department of Agriculture is accepting public comments through December 30. Comments may be submitted to the ODA Division of Livestock Environmental Permitting by mail, 8995 E. Main St., Reynoldsburg, OH, 43068, or by email to lepp@agri. ohio.gov.
If issued, the PTO would be valid for five years.
