UNT collaborates with Titomic Limited

December 18 – The University of North Texas (UNT) has partnered with Titomic Limited, the world’s leading supplier of cold spray solutions, to install a custom Titomic Kinetic Fusion (TKF) cold spray system. This groundbreaking system will enable UNT’s Center for Agile and Adaptive Additive Manufacturing (CAAAM) to drive cutting-edge research, promote industry collaboration and enhance its education initiatives.

Cold spray is an innovative technology that sprays metal powders at high speed to create or repair metal parts without having to melt them. This process enables stronger, more durable structures and avoids problems such as warping or thermal damage that often accompany traditional manufacturing techniques. This significant investment in a new and highly specialized technology will provide UNT with capabilities rarely available in academic or industrial settings, according to a press release.

The TKF system will enable UNT to produce and study multi-metal structures, develop multi-metal coatings that address corrosion and wear, and design repair solutions for high-performance components. By enabling the creation of these advanced materials and applications, the technology positions UNT to deliver new research results, transformative industrial developments and enhanced solutions for the real world. UNT’s leadership in cold spray application underscores its commitment to advancing manufacturing innovation and training future leaders in the field.

Titomic’s cold spray systems are capable of producing large-scale, high-quality components, including 3D printing titanium structures at a rate of 11 pounds per hour, with minimal dimensions. This scalability enables breakthrough applications in industries such as aerospace, defense and energy, and is used by Boeing, Rolls Royce, Volvo, Airbus, the US Navy’s NAVSEA and many other leading companies.

Higher education institutions like UNT are leading the way in translating cutting-edge research into real-world impact. Centers like CAAAM serve as the vanguard for the industry, testing and commercializing technologies like cold spray to reshape industries that rely on advanced manufacturing. This partnership highlights the critical role of academia in developing and deploying transformative solutions that strengthen industrial innovation and global competitiveness.
