A UPS customer center in Baltimore plans to close in August, according to a Maryland filing. The move will affect hundreds of employees.

A UPS (NYSE: UPS) location on Vero Road will close on Aug. 23, resulting in the layoff of 540 workers, according to a Work Adjustment and Retraining Notification filed on June 20 with the Maryland Department of Labor. The same UPS location laid off 118 workers in March.

A UPS representative sent this statement to FreightWaves: “As part of our Network of the Future initiative, we are modernizing our Baltimore facility at 3901 Vero Road and will temporarily close the facility on August 23, 2024. Our employees are extremely important to us and we are working to redeploy as many employees as possible to other positions at our temporary on-site hub or at nearby facilities. We remain committed to working with them and providing support during this transition. This temporary closure will not impact customer service and we have plans to continue serving the Baltimore community. We expect the enhanced Baltimore facility to reopen in late 2025.”

UPS announced earlier this year plans to close up to 200 locations over the next five years as part of a modernization drive, a plan that is expected to save $3 billion a year by 2028.

The company plans to replace a facility in Worcester, Massachusetts, about 47 miles from Boston, which would consolidate four regional facilities. UPS plans to upgrade a facility in Albany, New York, to increase capacity, resulting in the closure of another location. UPS has closed at least 15 centers in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
