Vehicle of aides in a convoy carrying Mexico’s next president involved in an accident that left one person dead

MEXICO CITY (AP) — A highway crash Friday involving an SUV carrying aides to Claudia Sheinbaum, who won Mexico’s June 2 presidential election, resulted in at least one fatality. Sheinbaum was not injured.

Sheinbaum’s spokesman said the advancing car struck another vehicle on a highway in the northern state of Coahuila, killing one person in the other car. Several Sheinbaum assistants were treated for injuries sustained in the crash.

Sheinbaum was driving another vehicle in the convoy well behind the lead car and was not injured. Although she has not yet been formally declared president-elect, she has won by a wide margin and a formal announcement of her victory is expected soon.

The accident occurred near the town of Monclova, Coahuila, near where Sheinbaum was scheduled to accompany President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on her first post-election tour, observing efforts to recover the remains of 63 miners who died in a coal mine accident in 2006.

Mexican authorities said this week that they have found the remains of several miners at the Pasta de Conchos mine, located about 90 miles (140 kilometers) north of Monclova.

Sheinbaum belongs to López Obrador’s Morena party. López Obrador, who leaves office on September 30, has long used his weekends to explore federal projects in far-flung states, while Sheinbaum’s political career has been largely confined to Mexico City.
