Ventura County officers shot and killed a suspected armed man early Sunday morning in Thousand Oaks.

According to a statement from officials with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, it happened just before 7 a.m. when officers were on Avenida de los Arboles.

“The incident began when officers made contact with a 37-year-old male who was seen holding a knife,” the statement said. “During the contact, the male approached one of the officers in a threatening manner with another device that appeared to be a bow and arrow.”

According to the officers, the man ordered several times to drop the weapon, but he did not do so and continued to “aggressively approach” the officer.

“As a result, an officer-involved shooting occurred,” officers said.

They provided medical aid to the suspect until he was taken by paramedics to a nearby hospital. His condition is said to be critical but stable at the latest.

Per department policy, the officer who fired the shots was terminated.

The Thousand Oaks Police Department has a contract with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.
