Ventura County Sheriff’s Department officers opened fire early Thursday morning on a man who witnesses said was running through the parking lot of a Newberry Park shopping plaza with a machete and a gas can.
Firefighters and emergency services responded around 6:30 a.m. to reports of a car fire in the parking lot at Ventu Park Road and Hillcrest Drive. Once there, witnesses said they saw a man running around the parking lot with a machete and a gas can.
Officers contacted the man, held him at gunpoint and demanded he drop the machete. According to the Ventura Sheriff’s Department, the man did not comply and that’s when officers opened fire.
As SkyCal flew overhead, a red gas could be seen on the ground in the plaza’s parking lot.
The man was hit and taken to hospital in unknown condition. No deputies were injured. No further information is available at this time.
